Proper communication about the results of inspections or the positive points of the inspection should be emphasized before the negative points are discussed. You should try to instill in the employee the feeling that since they were able to do well on some areas, they can do well on the other areas as well. It's important to physically show the employee the discrepancies, such as dust, poor vacuuming, make up on phones, etc. You should also demonstrate how it should look after they clean it. Make sure the employee fully understands what has not been done correctly and what (s) he must do to improve.
Consistency should be stressed. The employee should understand that a good inspection one day and a bad one another reflects inconsistent performance. The unpredictability of the cleaning is damaging for the image of the hospital, the department and the employee, not to mention the health of the patient. Consistency should be a goal to which every employee strives.
Be sure you don't talk down to an employee, but treat them with respect. Calmly discuss the problem areas and express your confidence that the employee will improve. Let him/her know you are there to help in any way possible.
When inspections improve, encourage the employees. Let them know that they are very important to your department. You will simply be amazed at how well they work once they feel they are sincerely valued.
