Since we retain limited amounts of information in a set period of time, it is best to break the tasks down. How tasks are broken down will vary based on the cleaning procedure. For example, if you were going to train an employee on stripping and refinishing, you would first discuss the concept behind the work.
Here we would explain that the concept of stripping and refinishing is one where we will be removing about 90-100% of the existing floor finish and seal in order to recoat with new sealer and/or finish. The difference between shower scrubbing and stripping should also be discussed as well as the reason why the floor is in too poor a condition to do less than stripping. Once you feel the main concept is understood, you would begin with preparing the equipment. From here, you would explain and demonstrate the stripping process.
At this point, do not go any further since you don't want to "overload" the new trainee. Let him finish stripping an area before going any further. This also gives you an opportunity to evaluate this stage of his work before he goes on to the next stage.
Similarly, if you are training an employee who would be responsible for both office cleaning and restroom cleaning, you would thoroughly train them on office cleaning and allow them to complete a given area, before moving on to restroom cleaning. This provides them an opportunity to retain the first level of training and creates a time for you to evaluate their progress and overall understanding.
